2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Extract the Crankshaft from an Engine Assembly on 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: You should start by wheel removing the engine assembly from the car and after that, separate the transaxle from the engine to remove the crankshaft. After this, remove the drive plate/flex plate and the crankshaft rear oil seal (1). Set the engine on a repair stand, empty the oil and get rid of the oil filter. Following that, the crankshaft vibration damper is removed and then the engine mount support bracket. Get rid of the front timing belt covers, remove the timing belt itself and remove the rear timing belt cover. Also, the oil pan (3), pick-up tube, crankshaft sprocket and oil pump must be taken out as well. Its important to also remove the balance shafts, housing assembly and the crankshaft position sensor. If pistons or connecting rods have to be changed, you'll need to take off the cylinder head first. Place a permanent ink or paint marker near the cylinder number on every connecting rod cap, so you don't need to use a number stamp or punch to mark this part. Be careful not to injure the fracture rod or cap while taking out all connecting rod bolts and caps; do not use the bolts again. Next, take out all the bed plate bolts from the engine block and use a mallet to gently tap the bedplate away from the engine block dowel pins so you don't pry up on any one side. The bed plate ought to be taken away evenly around the cylinder block dowel pins to protect them from damage. Carefully pick up the crankshaft and tread on it so you don't damage the owner rings and make certain you don't harm the main bearings or journals while lifting. After that, remove the screws that attach the target ring to the crankshaft and carefully remove the ring.
