2009 Dodge Avenger Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Brake Master Cylinder with ABS on 2009 Dodge Avenger?
A: You should bench bleed the master cylinder before removing it and putting in a master cylinder with ABS. Wash the back of the power brake booster carefully so no cleaner can get into it. A new O-ring seal (2) needs to go on the master cylinder mounting flange (1). If you find the master cylinder doesn't have a new vacuum O-ring seal, put it aside and place a new one on it, ensuring it's seated evenly on the mounting flange. If the connection meets resistance while insertion, pull out the master cylinder push rod, then make sure it is realigned and lined up with the booster push rod and reinsert them both together. Put the master cylinder in position so its holes line up with the studs on the booster, so the piston push rod aligns with the booster push rod and slowly place the master cylinder onto the booster. Put in two new master cylinder nuts (3) and tighten each to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Disconnect the plug when connecting a manual transaxle to a reservoir, drill the small cutout for the actuator at the center of the "V" groove (2), drop in the actuator and waste the old plug (3). Fit the clutch actuator hose (2) onto the reservoir port (1), then insert the hose clamp a little past the upset bead. Attach the tubes from the primary brake (1) and secondary brake (3) calipers to the two outlets (2) on the master cylinder and tighten each with 20 Nm (177 in. lbs.). Attach the wiring harness connector to the brake level switch (1) and then connect the ground cable on the battery. Correctly fill the master cylinder container so driving with a solid brake feel is possible; if it is unstable, clear the brake hydraulics and check for any leaks. Before you leave, give the brakes a road test to be sure they work correctly.
