2009 Dodge Avenger Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace the Piston's Connecting Rod in an Engine on 2009 Dodge Avenger?
A: When you want to replace the connecting rod, always treat the rods, pistons and rings as a single assembly first. Only replacing 1, 3 or 4 pistons can keep the engine balanced; staying away from swapping out 2 pistons is necessary. You should start by disconnecting the engine from the transaxle by removing everything necessary. Put the engine on a proper engine stand and get rid of the engine lift chain. After that, take out the cylinder head and let the engine oil drain. Remove the oil pan, oil filter, balance shaft assembly and ladder frame after one another. Be sure to clean out any carbon or debris from the cylinder before removing the pistons, so you don't scratch the piston skirts. Safely use a proven ridge reamer to smooth out the tops of the cylinders, keeping the tops of the pistons safe while you work. Center each connecting rod in its cylinder bore by rotating the crankshaft and mark the cylinder number on the caps with a paint or ink pen, instead of a stamp or punch. Take out the bolts from the connecting rod and remove the cap, because the bolts are meant for a single use only. Oftentarily, move out each group of pistons and rods from the cylinder, set the matching on the rod and slide them again into the motor.
