  Apply piston rings first, making sure that the top and second compression gaps are uneven with the oil ring rail so they are not lined up. Check that the oil ring expander ends are joined nicely and that the rail spacing is right as you look down from the top of the piston. Now, dip the piston in clean oil, slip the ring compressor onto the piston and be sure to place the arrow on the piston to the front of the engine. With the Crankshaft turned, center the connecting rod journal in the middle of the cylinder bore and add a bit of clean oil to the journal. Take the suitable Rod Bearing from the crankshaft nose, then set the connecting rod upper bearing half inside the connecting rod. Place the ring compressor on the top of the cylinder to tap the piston into place and move the connecting rod into contact with the journal. The connecting rod cap bolts must be replaced instead of reused; then, coat the oil on new bolts and insert the rod cap with the lower bearing and finish by gripping the bolts with your finger. Hold each bolt for cap assembly in turn and tighten the connecting rod bolts first to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) then 90 degrees more. Check the connecting rod side clearance using a feeler gauge and after that, put in the ladder frame, oil pump/balance shaft carrier assembly, Oil Pan and cylinder head. Next, fit the engine lift chain, link the transaxle to the engine and bolt the engine into its place.

  For the first step, place the piston rings properly on the piston so that the top compression ring and the second compression ring are unevenly aligned and not on top of the oil ring rail gap. Make sure that the ends of the oil ring expander fit tightly and the rail gaps are where they should be as seen when looking at the piston from above. Place the piston head and rings into engine oil and after that cover the ring compressor over the piston; check that the ring positions are not altered during the next step.
