2009 Dodge Caliber Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: What is the Proper Way to Install a Piston Ring Set on 2009 Dodge Caliber?
A: Before adding the piston rings, check that the identification mark on both the top and intermediate rings points upward on the piston. First, install the oil ring expander, then the upper oil ring side rail and finally put the lower oil ring side rail into place. On one side rail, set the end within the piston groove but below the oil ring expander, hold it tight and press until it fits in place. The upper compression ring in a normally aspirated engine is marked Y1 and the second compression ring is marked Y2 and both of these rings must be installed upward. In turbocharged engines, the "TOP" should be noted on the compression rings, facing up toward the ceiling. After that, install the No. 2 piston ring, then the No. 1 ring, checking what is called staggering (that is, positioning the gaps correctly when looking at the piston from the top) is essential for oil control. Put the oil expander ring gap in first place, the oil ring rails in second and fourth, the second compression ring gap in third and the top compression ring gap just below the rocker.
