Before installing the piston rings, check that the mark on the top of the upper and intermediate rings is facing up the piston. First, fit the oil ring expander in place, then put in the upper oil ring side rail and complete with the lower oil ring side rail. To fit the side rail, start by placing one end past the piston ring groove and between the piston and the oil ring expander, then use force to set it in position and don't use the piston ring expander. For normally aspirated engines, both the upper and the second compression ring are marked Y1 and Y2 and they have to be installed so the marks face up. On turbocharged engines, the top of the cylinder head is called "TOP," and this area should be facing up when the compression rings are installed. After the No. 2 ring, install the No. 1 ring in the correct alignment, viewed from above, because invertively staggering these rings is essential for oil control. Set the oil expander ring gap at the end closest to the crankshaft, the oil ring rails at the outer-most positions and fourth from the crankshaft, the second compression ring gap in between them in the third position and the top compression ring gap at the end farthest from the crankshaft.
