2009 Dodge Challenger Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2009 Dodge Challenger?
A: Before servicing the camshaft oil seal, first disconnect and insulate the negative battery cable and drain a portion of the cooling system. First, eliminate the upper intake manifold and then seal the openings on the lower intake manifold. To align the timing gears, first slacken and loosen the timing belt while holding the right camshaft sprocket with a 36 mm (1 7/16 in.) box end wrench to keep the timing mark in position, then take out the camshaft gear retaining bolt and its washer, observing that the right bolt measures 213 mm (8 3/8 in.) in length. The camshaft timing gears are precision keyed to the camshaft itself. Next, take out the right camshaft sprocket, disconnect the ignition coil and EGR valve wire harness connectors and slide the wire harness track retainer tabs off the cylinder head cover. Take out the two right ignition coils, detach the EGR valve with its two bolts and gasket, remove eight bolts from the right cylinder head cover, ten bolts from the right rocker arm assembly and three bolts from the right rear camshaft thrust plate. Gently slide the camshaft backward a span of roughly 3.5 inches from the cylinder head, making certain to avoid harming the cylinder head seal faces or the camshaft journals. Employ a suitable driver to gently detach the camshaft oil seal. Proceed in the same way for the left cylinder head, disconnecting and securing the negative battery cable, draining the cooling system and uninstalling the upper intake manifold while blocking the lower intake manifold openings. After removing the timing belt along with its camshaft sprockets, proceed to unfasten the rear timing belt cover. Unplug the wire harness plugs from the ignition coils, then disengage the wire-harness retainer clips from the cylinder head cover. Detach the left ignition coils, loosen eight bolts on the left cylinder head cover, then pull out ten bolts from the left rocker arm assembly and three bolts from the left rear camshaft thrust plate. Carefully shift the camshaft rearward about 3.5 inches within the cylinder head, making certain that the cylinder head sealing surface and its camshaft journal surfaces remain undamaged, then employ an appropriate driver to gently free the camshaft oil seal.
