2009 Dodge Durango Windshield Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install a Windshield on 2009 Dodge Durango?
A: After setting the windshield with urethane, let it cure for 24 hours before driving your car again. Open both the front door glass and the rear glass slider, when available, so the passenger compartment does not get pressurized and doesn't cause water leaks if a door is storm open before the urethane dries. Remove most of the bonding material hanging over most of the windscreen, but leave about 1-2 mm so you don't damage the paint or the strength of the new joint. If any support spacers are damaged or missing on the cowl area, near the bottom of the windshield, replace them with factory new spacers. For an installed windshield, lightly smooth the old bead of adhesive until it is about 1 mm thick and pull out any adhesive that has come loose. Place two new spacers on the A-pillars, one at the top and one at the bottom, being sure to evenly space them. Attach the lower assembly spacers (1) into the VWZ screwholes with their flat side facing up. Set the windshield in the center of the opening, depending on the side and lower spacers, then adjust the lower spacers as required to fit the exact roof gap tolerance. Stick on some adhesive tape (1) to support the final setup stage, then check that the windshield gap is parallel and cut away the tape and windshield with a sharp knife. Apply a suitable glass preparation solvent and wipe the glass using a rag until it is dry and clean. If you see damage, re-apply the glass primer to the affected places. Before you begin sanding, apply a small color primer to 15 mm (0.5 in.) of the glass frame around the edges, let it dry for 10 minutes or more and sand the primer afterward. Working with a new windshield, use spacers, lower spacer assemblies, center and position the windshield and apply tape. Check the windshield for harm, apply primer to the place where you'll apply glue and let it sit for a bit. Clean and vacuum the opening for the windshield, level the old adhesive to about 1 mm and make sure to clean the area you'll be re-gluing. Whenever the primed areas become damaged, reapply the primer and let the surface air dry for 10 minutes at the least. When inserting the adhesive, gently use the pointy nozzle to apply it to the windshield's seal, situated at the bottom, making sure it is 9.5 - to 12.0 mm wide and 12.7 - to 14.0 mm tall (1). Take the tape as a guide, slide the windshield into place and press it down gently with just a single person and avoid stepping on it yourself. After that, mount the cowl grille and the rear view mirror.
