  A: Before taking out and changing the piston rings, first figure out how much space there is between the rings and both the cylinder and piston. The cross sections of the No. 1 and No. 2 piston rings are not the same, so make sure the No. 2 ring is put in place with the manufacturer's dot pointing towards the top of the piston. First, you'll want to place the oil ring expander, followed by the lower oil ring side rail, the upper oil ring side rail and then the No. 2 intermediate piston ring, finishing with the top one or No. 1, upper piston ring. Put the other end of the side rail between the piston ring groove and the expander, then hold and press it down till it's in place. After fixing the upper side rail, place the lower side rail on next and after that, drop in the No. 2 piston ring and the No. 1 piston ring. Position the piston ring gaps and make sure the oil ring expander gap is at least 45° away from the side rail gaps and not near the center of the piston pin or in the direction of engine thrust, because the rings need to be staggered for good oil control.
