2009 Dodge Journey Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Belt on a 3.5L Engine on 2009 Dodge Journey?
A: You must first disconnect the rockers on a 3.5L engine, because this engine does not have freewheeling. If the camshafts aren't lined up with their timing marks, rotate them to the nearest mark without a full turn of the shaft to protect valuable components. Line up the crankshaft sprocket (10) with the TDC mark (9) showing on the oil pump cover and also line up the timing reference marks (1, 8) on the camshaft sprockets (2, 7) with the marks on the rear cover. Place the timing belt around the crankshaft sprocket (10), pulling down as it crosses the tensioner pulley (11), to make sure it remains tight as the belt goes around the pulley. Put the plunger into the tensioner body and use a pin to lock the tensioner before you reinstall it. Hold the tensioner pulley and rest the reset timing belt tensioner into the housing, fastening the bolts securely by hand. With the tensioner (12) installed, insert and slowly pull the retaining pin to permit the tensioner to reach the pulley bracket. Turn the crankshaft sprocket (10) two times and check that the timing marks are lined up on both shafts; if they aren't, start the process over. Place the front timing belt cover and use the 5 Nm (45 in. lbs.) socket to tighten the nut for the battery cable. Whenever the flywheel, valvetrain, camshaft or crankshaft sensors are repaired or replaced, the Cam/Crank Variation Relearn is required.
