2009 Dodge Ram 3500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace the Camshaft in a 5.7L Engine with MDS on 2009 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Be certain that the new camshaft will function correctly with the Multi Displacement System for 5.7L engines before you install it. Lubricate all of the cam lobes and bearings for the camshaft while it is still out. Insert the camshaft tensioner plate assembly and screw in the bolts until they reach 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). Following this, replace the timing chain and sprockets, then make sure the camshaft end play is right. If it is not, set up a new thrust plate. After that, mount the oil pump and the oil pick-up tube. If you reuse your tappets, put them back in their original places, but change all of them when you replace the camshaft. Remember that a Multi-Displacement System uses standard roller tappets as well as special tappets that allow disabled cylinders. These identifiable tappets are found in cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7 with two holes in their bodies for the latching pins. Check your parts for proper bentness, then put on the tappets and retaining yoke assembly and finally install the cylinder heads. Following this, you need to set in the push rods and rocker arms. Put on the timing case cover, oil pan and cylinder head covers. After that, add the intake manifold, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt. Next, put the radiator, air cleaner assembly and battery negative cable in place, fill both the coolant and engine oil, start the engine and inspect it for leaks.
