2010 Jeep Wrangler Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Timing Cover on 2010 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Removing the crankshaft oil seal first helps to guarantee the engine oil pump works properly when setting the timing cover. Rub the area where the timing cover will connect to both the cylinder block and the chain case cover to clear them of any debris, then slip the gasket over the cover, making sure the bottom of the gasket is 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) further than the cover's edge. Position the crankshaft so the oil pump drive flats are vertical and then move the oil pump inner rotor to fit the crankshaft drive flats properly. The timing cover should be installed first by tightening the M10 bolts (2,4,6) and then tighten the M8 bolts (1,3,5,7). Apply 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) of torque to bolts M10 in positions 2, 4 and 6 and a torque of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) to M8 bolts in positions 1, 3, 5 and 7. Bring the suspension up onto the hoist, then place the oil pan and cover it with a structural cover. After installing the front crankshaft oil seal (2), put the crankshaft vibration damper (2) in place and tighten the bolt of the damper to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Join the oil pressure switch to the other end of the lower radiator hose and the heater hose. After installing the A/C condenser, install a new oil filter (2), the camshaft position (CMP) sensor and the A/C compressor (2) using three bolts (1, 3 and 4), tightening all to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) following the correct sequence. Affix the indicator tube (3), add the indicator length you prefer (1) and tighten the bolt (2) to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Put in the generator and the power steering pump, then bolt them down using 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs) to tighten. Attach the water pump pulley (2) to the water pump hub (1) and tighten them with 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) of torque. Set and tighten the belt tensioner (6), then run the accessory drive belt (8) through the system and finish with the air cleaner housing assembly (1). Add the right amount of oil to the engine crankcase and top off the coolant in the system as well. After that, attach the negative battery cable and ensure the nut is torqued to 5 Nm (45 in. lbs.).
