Chrysler Cirrus Backing Plate Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How can a Backing Plate be serviced and repaired on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
To service and repair the backing plate, first raise the vehicle on jackstands or center it on a hoist, then remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Next, take off the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing assembly, followed by the removal of the retaining nut for the rear hub and bearing assembly, allowing it to be taken off the rear spindle. Remove the rear brake shoe assemblies from the brake support plate and disconnect the rear brake flex hose tube from the wheel cylinder, also removing the brake flex hose bracket from the brake support plate. Use a 1/2 wrench to compress the retainer fingers on the parking brake cable housing and start pulling the cable housing out of the support plate, or alternatively, use an aircraft type hose clamp to compress the three fingers. Remove the four brake support plate to knuckle attaching bolts and washer assemblies to separate the brake support plate from the rear suspension knuckle. For installation, place a gasket and the brake support plate on the rear spindle, tightening the support plate-to-spindle attaching bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.). Insert the parking brake cable end fitting into the brake support plate, then hand start the hydraulic brake hose tube fitting to the wheel cylinder, tightening the tube nut to 17 Nm (145 inch lbs.). Install the rear brake shoe assemblies on the brake support plate, followed by the rear hub and bearing on the rear spindle, securing it with a NEW hub and bearing assembly retaining nut tightened to 250 Nm (185 ft. lbs.), and then install the dust cap. Adjust the brake shoe assemblies to ensure they do not interfere with the brake drum installation, then install the brake drum on the rear hub/bearing assembly. Bleed the vehicle's base brakes hydraulic system, and after the brake drums are installed, pump the brake pedal several times for final adjustment of the brake shoe assemblies. Finally, install the wheel and tire assembly, tightening the wheel mounting stud nuts in the proper sequence to half specification, then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.).
