The first step to service either of the rear parking brake cables is to take out the 2 screws holding the rear of the center console assembly to its bracket. To reach the set screw on a vehicle with an automatic transmission, lift the knob using a 2 mm alien wrench. For a manual transmission, press the shifter boot down to reveal the clips and roll pin, gently pull the clips from their rests, lift the shifter straight up as you remove the boot by squeezing the plastic around it. Then, take out the 2 front screws, point the park brake hand lever to where it will clear the console and lift the center console/armrest out. First, pull the park brake lever down, next unfasten the adjusting nut on the output cable to relax the tension and last, take the rear park brake cable out of the tension equalizer. Unfasten the rear seat cushion, take off the scuff plates from the rear doorsills and roll the rear carpeting forward to see the cables. Release the routing clip from the floor pan, compress the tabs on the park brake cable retainer with a 1/2 in. wrench and pull out the cable from the console bracket. Put the vehicle up on jack stands, replace the rear wheel and tire setup and after that, the rear
Brake Drum. Take off the dust cap and the retaining nut, remove the rear hub/bearing assembly and then detach the end of the park brake cable and the support plate using a 1/2 in. wrench. Take out the bolts that keep the bracket for the brake cable onto the frame rail and pull the park brake cable out with its grommet from the floor pan. Before installing, fit the new cable under the floor pan with the sealing cover in place and then, when fitting to the brake, make sure the locking flat tabs are expanded. Place the routing brackets in front of the rear frame rail on the correct side and then tightly bolt them in place. Hook the cable from the park brake to the actuating lever, place the hub/bearing assembly with a new retaining nut tightened to 250 Nm (186 ft. lbs.) and install the dust cap. Take care to first reinstall both the rear brake drum and wheel and tire assembly and tighten the stud nuts by crisscrossing, using 100 ft. lbs. Lower the vehicle, fit the sealing grommet all the way down, take the park brake cable under the carpeting to the console bracket and attach the cable in place. Throw away the old output cable clip and tension equalizer and set up new ones instead. Fix a new park brake cable tension equalizer and check that the cable retainer is tightly latched. Change the cable's tension depending on whether you have hydraulic or mechanical brakes, act the parking brake lever to set it up and see that the rear wheels spin freely when the lever is off. After that, set the right amount of free play in the park brake lever, slot the center console into place and make sure everything, including the shifter boot and knob, rear carpeting, scuff moldings and lower rear seat cushion are secure.
