First place both front wheels straight forward and then turn the steering wheel one-half turn to the right and use the ignition cylinder lock to hold the steering column in place. Open the hood, then take out the negative
Battery Cable from its remote terminal and wait two minutes, so that the reserve capacitor can be empty. Make sure not to harm the finish or the wood grain on the steering wheel where it appears on some models. Remove the steering wheel's speed control switches, plastic connectors and the bolts holding the driver's
Air Bag. Pop the driver air bag, separate the air bag and horn wire connectors and take out the air bag. If there are audio control switches on the rear of the steering wheel, take out the 4-way connector between the
Clock Spring and steering wheel harness. Remove the fastening nut beneath the steering wheel, then use a steering wheel puller to lift the steering wheel out, making sure the wires go through the opening in the steering wheel armature. While installing, set the steering wheel one half turn (180 degrees) to the right (clockwise), ensure the column is locked with the ignition cylinder lock and position the turn signal stalk in the neutral position. Gently pull all the wires through the main opening of the hub area on the wheel and attach the steering wheel, making certain the flats match up and the leads are not caught by the clock spring. Put on the retaining nut and secure it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), then pass the speed control wires through the way in the back of the steering wheel. Attach the end of the horn lead wire and of the air bag chord to the module output. When audio control switches are present, link the 4-way connector from the clock spring to the lead on the steering wheel harness and add the connector at the 12 O'clock mark in the back cover. Put the driver air bag in, tighten the bolts to 8 Nm (75 inch lbs.) and then wire the speed control switches to the motor and fasten them with 1.5 Nm (13 inch lbs.) of torque. Don't attach the battery negative cable to the remote terminal just yet; use the air bag system test procedure first.
