Check the water pump for cracked or damaged areas, signs of thick glycol dripping down from the pump body on the 3.2/3.5L version and similar drips near the pump on the 2.7L engine. Having a thin black line below the pump weep hole is considered merely part of how the pump works. Examine if there is rubbing inside the 2.7L cylinder block or on the timing belt cover of 3.2/3.5L engines and look at any excessively loose or badly functioning bearings. It's normal for the weep hole to release a very small amount of coolant and cause a black mark on the water pump body on all engines; a large amount of coolant on these engine parts, though, means the shaft seal has failed and the pump needs to be swapped. Thoroughly check the system before deciding you need to replace the water pump.

  You don't have to remove the air conditioning system to swap out the water pump on any model. If you see a little coolant from the weep hole but it doesn't make a heavy or continuous deposit, everything is working properly and further analysis is necessary before replacing the water pump. Before you start, drain the cooling system, get rid of the upper radiator crossmember, fan and Drive Belt, as the main Timing Chain drives the water pump. After that, remove the timing chain and all the chain guides, next come out the bolts holding the water pump to the block and finally unbolt the water pump and gasket. Examine the pump for any scratch, crack, ruined seal, impeller touching the inside of the block or wobbly bearings; while a black mark below the pump hole is common. When you are installing, first tidy up all the areas that need to be sealed, put in the water pump and gasket, fasten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), next install the timing chain guides and timing chain, add the timing chain cover, connect the crankshaft damper, fit the accessory drive belts, attach the radiator fan, then the radiator upper crossmember and fill the cooling system.
