First, undo the bolts on the engine and take it out before removing the transaxle from it. Put the engine on a stand, then remove the
Oil Filter, the
Oil Pan and the oil pick-up tube. After that, take out the
Timing Chain cover and then remove both the timing chain and sprockets. Take out the rear oil seal and retainer for the crankshaft, remembering never to change or mix the connecting rod caps, because the 3.8L may have a mix of standard forged or cracked caps. When the connecting rod cap can be turned, make a mark or a scribe on it and then remove the cap very carefully to avoid harming the crankshaft bearing surfaces. Do this same process for all of the connecting rod caps. With reassembly, discard the main bearing bolts and washers and then attach new assemblies instead. First, loosen and take off the main bearing cap bolts, then remove both parts of the main bearing caps and at last remove the crankshaft from the engine block.
