Before servicing and repairing the front door exterior handle, first roll the door glass up and remove the watershield to access the outside door handle. If the vehicle comes outfitted with a vehicle theft security system switch, disconnect the switch connector from the door harness through the access hole at the rear of the inner door panel. Moreover, if the vehicle comes equipped with a VTSS switch harness, disengage the push-in fasteners that attach the harness to the vehicle's inner door reinforcement bar. Next, unplug the clip that secures the door latch linkage to the door latch and take out the latch linkage. Then, unplug the clip that secures the door lock linkage to the door latch and take out the lock linkage. Take out the nuts holding the outside dooor handle to the door outer panel and remove the handle from the vehicle. If you are changing the outside door handle, you will need to transfer the lock from the old to the new. Place the new outer door handle on the vehicle. Install the nuts to attach the handle to the door outer panel. Tighten to 6 N.m (50 in.lbs.). Insert the lock linkage into the door latch and engage the clip to secure the door lock linkage to the latch. Insert the latch linkage inside the door latch and engage the clip to lock the door latch linkage in place. Fit the push-in fasteners to retain the VTSS switch harness to the inner door reinforcement bar, if so equipped, and connect the VTSS switch connector to the door harness, if so equipped. Lastly, check the operation of the door latch and install the sound shield and door trim panel.
