When removing the front cradle crossmember, detach the battery negative terminal, take off the steering column cover and backing plate first. Realign the front wheels, making sure the steering wheel isn't turned and disconnect the lower coupling after you connect the arm to the steering gear. Pull out the clinch bolt and carefully take the coupling off from the telescoping steering gear shaft. Raise the vehicle on safety stands and make sure a drain pan is set up below the
Power Steering Pump and the oil return hose fitting. Close the return hose with hose pinch-off pliers (C-4390) between the crossmember coupling and the pump, then loosen the hose clamp at the cradle crossmember coupling and remove the return hose from the metal tube. As you hold the nut on the pressure relief valve, remove the flare nut connecting the high-pressure hose to the back of the pump and let the fluid drop into the collection pan. Lift away the anti-lock brake sensor bolts and put the leads safely away from the crossmember. Take out the links between the stabilizer bar and the ends and also remove the lower ball joints from the bottoms of the
Steering Knuckles. Takve out the heat shield on the rear engine mount and the bolt that secures it to the cradle crossmember. Scribble the outline of the cradle crossmember on the frame rails first, so you know where to put it back. Then, support the crossmember on a suitable lift and remove the bolts that held it to the front frame rails. For assembly, place the crossmember on a suitable lift, attach it to the vehicle's front frame by loosening the bolts and finish the installation later. Attach the upper half of the bushing to the crossmember, align it with the square tube from below, match the crossmember's location to your previous marks on the frame rails and use bolts to secure them. Join the rear engine mount to the cradle crossmember with the through bolt and secure it with an 68 N.m (50 ft.lbs.) firmness, then mount the rear mount heat shield again. Attach the lower ball joints to the steering knuckles, bolt the stabilizer bar links to the stabilizer bar ends and attach the anti-lock brake sensor leads bolts to the cradle crossmember. Attach one end of the high-pressure hose to the pump, the return hose to the metal tube and then tighten the hose clamp at the cradle crossmember coupling. Place the steering in the straight ahead position, snap the steering column coupling onto the telescoping gear shaft and hold it in place by tightening the clinch bolt. Afterward, place the steering column cover backing plate in place, connect the steering column lower cover and reattach the black battery cable.
