Before starting to service the fuel tank unit in an all-wheel drive vehicle, let the air pressure out of the fuel system and stop any possible sources that could cause a spark while working. First, open the air cleaner lid, remove the inlet air temperature sensor from its connector, cut the makeup air hose and remove the negative
Battery Cable. After that, lift the rear
Seat Cushion and its cover and then tidy up any loose dust and particles in the top quarter of the tank. Open up the side module's lock ring with special tool #9340, making sure to position the
Fuel Pump correctly on the top of the fuel tank for correct reading of the fuel gauge. Gripping the module, lift it out of the tank so no fuel gets in the vehicle and then drain the fuel from the fuel pump module outside. Remove the cable from the internal line hooked to the fuel pump module, tilt it and let the last of the fuel out before taking out the module. Open and remove the seal over the tank and wipe the top once again. Disconnect from the module and now look at where the fuel unit is found on top of the fuel tank, so you have it placed correctly for the fuel gauge. Take the lock ring out with Special Tool Lock Ring #9318, disconnect the line, remove the fuel level unit module and finally pull out the module and seal from the tank while discarding the seal.
