Timing Belt in the Dodge Caravan basically ensures that the crankshaft and camshaft rotate at equal speeds and the engine valves open and close in perfect coral with the pistons for effectiveness. This synchronization is made by a rubber belt which has fibers inside it, and which is operated by the crankshaft while driving the camshaft(s) with the assistance of a tensioner and idler pulleys. Many Dodge caravan models have incorporated the use of timing belts as this is preferred over chains and gears because it is cheaper, noisless and flexible to install. In the previous designs, coarser systems may have been employed, however, new timing belts are equipped with better materials and curved transverse with improved durability and less noise production. In non-interference engines, the formation of the belt is recommended as it is recommended for the consumer for regular inspection and timely replacement of the belt and other parts in the engine.

Dodge Caravan Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Belt on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Remove the air cleaner upper cover, the housing and the clean air tube, after which the make-up air hose from the cylinder head cover should be taken out. Hoist up the vehicle, remove the right front wheel and accessory splash shield and remove all the Drive Belts. Then, remove both the Crankshaft vibration damper as well as the air conditioner/generator Belt Tensioner and pulley assembly. Break the timing belt front upper cover bolts and remove the cover after lifting the vehicle up. Scaredy Cat Remove both the mount for the right engine and the bracket holding it in place. If you rotate the engine from the crankshaft, it will guarantee the Camshaft does not move after the timing belt removal, to ensure the valve components are not damaged. Move the crankshaft until the TDC marker on the pump housing is beside the TDC marker on the last tooth of the crankshaft's sprocket. Put a 6 mm Allen wrench into the belt tensioner and while turning it counterclockwise, insert the 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench into the locking hole. When the timing belt moves, take it off the engine. Unplug the negative battery cable and remove the timing belt before you use Special Tools 6793 and C-4685-C2 to take off the crankshaft sprocket. Never clean a timing belt because it will still need replacing if it's contaminated; clear every sprocket with an appropriate cleaning liquid. It is important to use Special Tool 6792 to guarantee the crankshaft sprocket is seated at the original depth to prevent the belt and engine from getting damaged. Line up the arrow on the oil pump housing with the crankshaft sprocket and put the exhaust camshaft sprocket a 1/2 notch under the intake camshaft sprocket so the arrow on both remains facing upward. Fit the timing belt on top of the crankshaft, next go around the water pump sprocket, then the idler, camshafts and tensioner. Loosen the exhaust camshaft sprocket by rotating it to the right, letting the belt slack out and taking the pull pin out or Allen screw. Rotate the engine crankshaft two complete turns after securing the timing belt and releasing the tensioner to make sure the TDC marks and the timing marks are in line. Next, put in the Engine Mount bracket, timing belt front covers and bolts, air conditioning/generator belt tensioner and pulley, right engine mount, crankshaft vibration damper, accessory drive belts, drivetrain splash shield, right front wheel, the air hose to the cylinder head cover and finish with the air cleaner housing, upper housing and tube.
  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Belt on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Position the car on a hoist, remove the right front tire, get rid of the right inner splash shield and uninstall the accessory Drive Belts. Following that, unscrew and remove the Crankshaft damper bolt, the damper and the generator belt idler pulley. Release the fasteners holding on the lower timing belt cover, remove the cover, then drop the auto to access the upper cover's fasteners and remove it too. Don't forget to remove the proper right Engine Mount and support, plus always rotate the engine using the crankshaft when matching the timing marks on the shafts, because rotating the Camshaft after the timing belt comes off can hurt the valve parts. Continue to rotate the crankshaft until you can fully see the outward mark on the crankshaft sprocket helped by the oil pump housing mark. Put a 6 mm Allen wrench into the Belt Tensioner and before turning it, fit the long end of a 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench into the hole in front of the tensioner. While rotating the tensioner counterclockwise, slide the 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench into the locking hole and gently remove the timing belt. If the belt's damage comes from its tracking being incorrect, the belt tensioner assembly must be changed. Before installation, place the crankshaft sprocket against the arrow on the oil pump house and set the camshaft timing marks so that the exhaust camshaft sprocket is a 1/2 notch beneath the intake camshaft sprocket and both arrows on the sprockets are facing up. Work the timing belt in by beginning at the crankshaft, curving around the water pump sprocket, the idler pulley, the camshaft sprockets and finally the tensioner. Turn the exhaust camshaft sprocket counterclockwise, pushing the pulley closer to mark the belt next to it and loosen the belt, then take the small Allen wrench or pull pin out from the belt guide. With the timing belt snapped in place and the tensioner loose, spin the crankshaft two times and make sure the marks for TDC and the timing marks are matched. Restore all the parts you took off previously: the right engine mount and support bracket, upper timing belt cover bolts screwed in at 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.), lower timing belt cover bolts screwed in at 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.), generator belt idler pulley with its bolt tightened to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), crankshaft damper, accessory drive belts, right inner splash shield and the right front wheel.
