Piston flow with variation. The only approved fluid for the 42RLE Automatic Transmission is Mopar® ATF+4 and it is recommended to replace the filter during a transmission oil change and clean the magnet inside the
Oil Pan with a clean, dry cloth. After the transmission is taken apart, change the fluid and filter too. At first, put the vehicle on a hoist and place a container to catch the drained oil under the transmission's oil pan. Out of all the bolts that attach your oil pan, just one has a sealing patch on it from the factory and needs to be removed and put back on. Unscrew the pan bolts and tap one spot on the pan to loose it, so the fluid can drain before removing the oil pan. Place a new filter and o-ring onto the bottom of the
Valve Body and tighten the retaining screws to 5 Nm or 45 in. lbs. In the area specified, apply some Mopar® Lock AND Seal Adhesive to the sealing patch on the oil pan bolt just before putting it in place. Wipe down the oil pan as well as the magnet before fitting the pan with fresh Mopar® Silicone Adhesive and tighten bolts to 20 Nm (14.5 ft. lbs.). Insert four quarts of Mopar® ATF+4 into the dipstick tube, turn on the engine and idle it for one minute or more. Once you have your parking and service brakes on, hold each position on the shift lever for a second or two before moving it into park or neutral. See if the transmission fluid is at the proper level, adding journal bearings when you need to fill to the level marked 3mm or 1/8 in. below the lowest point on the dipstick. Recheck how much transmission fluid is present after it has reached its operating temperature of 82°C (180°F) and be sure the dipstick is not up too far inside so that dirt cannot get into the transmission.
