Dodge Challenger Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove a Shift Cable on Dodge Challenger?
    A:
The first step is to put the transmission into PARK, then raise the vehicle. After that, take out the gearshift cable retaining clip (4) if fitted, disconnect the cable from the shift lever (3) and remove it from the bracket (2). Lower the vehicle and, when required, pull out the floor console to gain access to the shift controls and related cables. Should this become necessary, undo the bolts that main the shield covering the cables and gearshift, then disengage the seal from its supports. On the shift cable end, pull the gearshift cable from the shift lever pin and take out the gearshift cable retainer from the shifter assembly's notch (2). From below the car, take off the shift cable grommet (2) from the dash panel and lastly, remove the gearshift cable (1) from within the car.
  • Q: How to install a Shift Cable on Dodge Challenger?
    A:
Set the gearshift cable (1) under the dash panel by squeezing it toward the shifter assembly from under the front compartment. After that, place the grommet (2) onto the dash panel and secure the gearshift cable retainer (2) into the shifter assembly's notch (2). Put the gearshift cable (1) on the shift lever pin (3) and if needed, loosen the screw (5) on the cable adjuster. After the gearshift cable (1) goes in front of the air conditioning lines and heater hoses (2), direct it toward the transmission (3) side of the manual lever and raise the vehicle. If you can turn the propeller shaft freely, rotate the manual shift lever toward the back, without depressing the clutch pedal and continue rotating the propeller shaft until the PARK system secures it. Direct the gearshift cable (1) through the bracket (2) and connect it onto the transmission manual shift lever (3). Drop the vehicle and then check that the shifter is in PARK. Screw the adjustment nut to 7 Nm (65 in.lbs.) and make sure the shifter is working as it should. If you need this shield, mount it on the gearshift and park lock cables to the car's floorpan and put in some bolts to secure it. When everything else is done, place the floor console, insert the lower instrument panel components and put in the dash panel insulation pad if your make requires it.
