First, cut the negative
Battery Cable and take out the power steering fluid from the pump reservoir to work on the rack and pinion. Support the vehicle to make it easier, then take out the wheel mounting nuts and both front wheels. Watch out not to twist the bellows when adjusting the jam nut and movable tie rod; remove the clamp at the inner tie rod and see that the bellows can move freely. First, release the tie rod jam nut outside each tie rod, then remove the end nut from every knuckle. Take apart the outer tie rod from the joints in both knuckles using the Remover, Special Tool 9630. Loosen and remove the rack and pinion pinch bolt, unthread the nut on the return hose from the rack and pinion and remove the return hose. Loose the nut on the pressure hose tube connected to the rack and pinion and take out the pressure hose. Unscrew the mounting screws and the heat shield on top of each inner tie rod bellows, then remove the upper mounting screw and both lower mounting bolts from the rack and pinion. Should you need to, remove the outer tie rods from the rack and pinion and count the number of rotations for future reference when installing. If installation is required, match the thread number on the original outer tie rod to the inner tie rod replacement for a close toe setting. Set the rack and pinion onto the mount and tighten the lower mounting bolts. Then install the upper mounting bolt and nut, making sure you tighten all bolts to 102 Nm. Place a heat shield above both the inner tie rod bellows and tighten each screw to 10 Nm. Ensure you install a fresh O-ring on all the steering hoses, adding some clean power steering fluid to the O-ring on the pressure hose and tighten the tube nut to 47 Nm. Apply grease again to the return hose O-ring, secure the return hose to the rack and pinion and tighten the tube nut to 47 Nm, using a wrench. Align the splines, fit the steering coupling to the shaft and use a new pinch bolt to secure it after tightening it to 54 Nm. Installing the outer
Tie Rod End onto its knuckle, fasten with nuts that are tightened to 85 Nm, followed by mounting the tire and wheel, tightening the wheel mounting nuts to 150 Nm. Raise the vehicle and return the negative cable to the battery, making sure it is on properly. Put liquid into the reservoir, start the pump and then adjust the wheel toe. After that, set the tie rod jam nuts at 75 Nm.
