The Universal Joint in Dodge Dakota automobiles is very important since it connects the driveshaft with the differential so that it must provide the necessary movements as the suspension adapts to the irregularities of the road. This component allows rotation of the driveshaft to occur when there exists changes in the transmission angle to the axle structure. Normally, the Universal Joint in its most basic form is a cross with needle bearings retained in hardened steel cups which were designed to optimize the joint's strength. Throughout Dodge Dakota's years, it has incorporated several Universal Joint designs where factory models include pre-lubed Universal Joints while Universal Joints include grease zerks for greasing. Not only does Worn Universal Joints cause noticeable problems like loud sounds and shaking, but also they require the inspections and, therefore, replacement. This knowledge is crucial in the lengthening of its service time and effectiveness to the Dodge Dakota vehicles.

Dodge Dakota Universal Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace Components in a Universal Joint on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
Damaged or leaky parts of a cardan universal joint must all be changed as a set instead of individually. Start by lifting out the propeller shaft from the motor. Tap gently around the bearing cap's outer rim to loosen the snap rings, then take off all the bearing cap snap rings. Hold the joint in an arbor press or a vise, so that the bearing cap fits snugly below the link yoke and is accessible with a socket. On the top end of the bearing cap, install a socket slightly smaller than the outside diameter and part of the bearing cap from the outboard side to give enough room for your vise jaws. Before applying your vise, remove any greasing fittings that may hinder its removal. With vise jaws, hold onto the bearing that's sticking out and use a mallet and drift pounded on the link yoke until the bearing cap detaches from the yoke. After making sure the nuts are loose, flip the assembly and treat it just like the first steps, allowing you to remove the other bearing cap, the whole cross centering kit assembly and the spring. Remove the rest of the bearings by pressing them from the end of the link yoke where they are located. Ensure that both link yoke and propeller shaft yoke alignment marks line up when assembling. Crank up the Extreme Pressure (EP) feature when using N. L. G. 1. Putter some grade 1 or 2 grease inside every yoke bore to help them slide in smoothly. Position a cross inside the shaft yoke and sit a cap over the trunnion so that it coordinates with the shaft yoke's bore, with the bearings resting vertically. Set the bearing cap into the yoke bore until you can add and install a snap ring. Turn the propeller shaft yoke and fit the bearing cap to the opposite trunnion, then fit a snap ring onto the side. Place the link yoke on the last two trunnion rods and push the bearing caps down. Later, add the snap rings. Put the centering kit assembly into the link yoke, making sure the spring is correct. Put bearing caps on the opposite trunnions of the last cross, fit the open trunnions into the link yoke bores and place the bearing caps into the centering kit. Fit the two missing bearing caps and snap rings, then tap each ring until it quickly seats into its groove. Flex the joints so it lies beyond center; they should snap over-center as you flex them in both directions. After that, fit the propeller shaft in place.
  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Single Cardan Universal Joint on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
The first step in service and repair of a single cardan universal joint is to remove the propeller shaft. Side tap the outside of the bearing cap assembly with a drift to loosen the snap ring and take out the snap rings from both halves of the yoke. Fix the yoke into an arbor press or vise with a socket large enough to cover the cap inside the yoke, making sure the fitting on top is upward facing if you have one. Pick a socket with an outer diameter smaller than the upper bearing cap will fit the. If you can't pull the bearing cap out by hand after pressing, gently hit the yoke ear close to the cap to remove it. Lay the yoke down flat, push the cross straight through the hole and keep pushing on the end of the cross to remove the opposite bearing cap. When mounting the cross or bearing cap, place them straight so they won't scratch or mar the sides of the yoke bore. To assemble, put extreme pressure (EP) N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease in the yoke bores. Assemble the cross so that its up-pointing lube fitting is in the yoke and cover the trunnion with a bearing cap, placing it so that it matches the yoke bore and the bearings stay upwards. Press the bearing cap down until you can slide a snap ring past. Do the same for the next bearing cap and, if the joint feels shaky or needs lubrication, tap on the yoke using a soft hammer to help the needle bearings fit. If you have a lube fitting, slather a little grease there and set the propeller shaft in place once the boat is ready.
