  Before placing the torque converter, check the edges of the converter hub and drive notches for sharp edges, scratches and burrs and use 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth to smooth them to keep the pump seal from being damaged. Cover the converter hub and the oil pump seal lip with transmission fluid, then put the torque converter on the transmission Be careful not to hurt the oil pump seal or bushing as you install the torque converter in the front of the transmission. Synch the torque converter with the oil pump seal opening and put the hub inside the oil pump. While pushing on the torque converter, spin it until it is placed correctly between the oil pump gears. Place the converter on a flat surface and check the lugs with either a scale or a straightedge; the lugs should be set so that the level of the converter is 1/2 in. to the rear of the straightedge. You may need to fasten the converter momentarily with a C-clamp to the housing. Set the transmission into the vehicle and make sure you add the recommended transmission fluid.
