When putting in new stones in the valve seats, the correct size pilot is essential for a proper and complete surface. Record any runout of the valve seat using a dial indicator, making sure the total is not more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Prussian blue should be applied to the valve seat; the center of the valve face should turn blue if contact is present. When the roughness is found at the top edge, reduce the valve seat using a 15 degree stone and if it's at the bottom edge, lift it with a 65 degree stone. If the seat width and angle match the proper limit, worn or burning seats on valves can be reworked; however, if they don't, the cylinder head should be changed. The seat in the intake should be manufactured to a width between 1.00 and 1.50 mm and the seat in the exhaust should measure between 1.25 and 1.75 mm. Following refacing, measure the height of the new valve spring. brush the piston rod of each valve with clean engine oil and fit it into the cylinder head. Should valves or seats be refaced, confirm the valve tip height and trim the valves if the intake valve surpasses 47.836 mm (1.883 inch) or the exhaust valve tops 47.837 mm (1.883 inch). Over each valve stem, place the valve seal/spring seat assembly in the valve guides. Be certain that the garter spring fits around the outer top of the rubber seal. Set the valve springs and retainer in place on the spring seat, press on the spring with a compressor and attach the retainer locks. Check the height of the springs from their top to their bottom surface and, if it is over 38.75 mm (1.5256 inch), put a 0.762 mm (0.030 inch) spacer under the valve spring seat in the head counterbore to fix the height.

Before you remove the valves, clear out any burrs in the valve stem retainer lock grooves and make sure the stem UP is on or above the valve guide. When taking out each valve, carefully look at it to know its position for reassembly. Before installation, apply some clean engine oil to the valve stems (2) and press them inside the cylinder head. If the valve or seat has been reground, check the length of the valve tips (5); if they are longer than 47.836 mm (1.883 inch) for the intake valve or 47.837 mm (1.883 inch) for the exhaust valve, shorten them by grinding on the cylinder head until they fit specs (7).
