For starter motor maintenance, first cut off the negative
Battery Cable and secure the
Steering Wheel in place. Lift and support the vehicle and after that, remove the underbody splash shield. After that, disconnect the electrical line from the starter and remove the lower intermediate steering shaft using its bolts, also taking out the upper one next. Remove the bolts, wiring clip and release the starter forward and down so you can pull it around the exhaust and past the intermediate steering shaft to take it out of the vehicle. During installation, put the starter over the transmission and exhaust and direct it upward towards the engine. Slide the plastic retainer into the starter dust shield, so that its TOP mark faces downward and snap it onto the engine block. Fix the starter and screw its bolts in place, but only to 54.2 N.m (40 ft. lbs.). Attach the wire back to the starter, match the flat spots inside the
Intermediate Shaft to those inside the extension shaft and insert the shaft into the extension with the holes in line. Loosely attach the extension to the intermediate shaft with the pinch bolt, then tighten it to 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.). After that, install the underbody splash shield, drop the vehicle down, remove the steering wheel holder and attach the negative battery cable.
