Dodge Neon cars have Catalytic Converter as an important part of the exhaust as well as emission system, it helps to alter dangerous gases formed during the process of combustion into less hazardous fumes. CO, HC, and NOx are chemically converted into water, CO2, and Nitrogen, N2 respectively using the assistance of catalyst such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium among others. In various years of the production of Dodge Neon models, different types of Catalytic Converters have been used including but not limited to, the two-way Catalytic Converters and the three way Catalytic Converters. The latter was made standard by 1981 with a capability of decreasing NOx, in addition to oxidizing CO and HC. There is also the Performance Catalytic Converters, they have more holes for high flow to benefit the performance of the engine whilst still requiring the efficiency of the catalytic converter. As with any other auto part there are distinctions between direct fit and universal converters while those classified as direct fit can be bolted into place universal converters may need some further modifications in order to be installed.

Dodge Neon Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Catalytic Converter on Dodge Neon?
    A:
The catalytic converter should not be serviced until the exhaust system has cooled, as it works under very hot conditions. First, get rid of the Muffler and Exhaust Pipe and then cut the electrical cables at the downstream Oxygen Sensor. Whenever using LEV models, take off the Exhaust Manifold support bracket from the head of the engine. After that, remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold using the fasteners and throw out the flange gasket. Observe the catalytic converter to spot any trouble with air or fuel and carefully check the element using a borescope or flashlight to find any cracks so you can find the real problem before changing it, because many failures come from air, fuel or ignition issues. When installing, join the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold by using a new flange gasket and for LEV models, set the exhaust manifold support bracket back in place, tighten M10 to 54 Nm, M12 to 95 Nm and the nut to 28 Nm. With NLEV models, fasten the manifold support bracket to the heat shield using a bolt tightened to 28 Nm. Setup the connection between the muffler, the pipe and the catalytic converter, fixing the isolators underneath the car. Apply torque to the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold fasteners up to 28 Nm and confirm that all surrounding parts are straight before tightening all slip joint band clamps to 47 Nm. Do not tighten exhaust band clamps too markedly or you may lose their clamping effect. Yet again, if you took out the downstream oxygen sensor, put it back and ensure the electrical connector is connected.
  • Q: How to Maintain a Catalytic Converter on Dodge Neon?
    A:
Be certain that the catalytic converter's exhaust system has cooled, being as it is very hot while operating. Drop the Muffler, pull out the pipe and then release the electric connection on the downstream Oxygen Sensor. LEV vehicles need the Exhaust Manifold support bracket be removed. After that, separate the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold by removing its attaching bolts and discard the old flange gasket. Check for any blockages in the catalytic converter and look inside it for cracks or melted substrate using a camera or light, so you can find the issue before a replacement. Put the catalytic converter onto the exhaust manifold by placing a new flange gasket in between, fix the exhaust manifold support bracket and tighten the M10 bolt to 54 Nm, the M12 bolt to 95 Nm and the nut to 28 Nm. After connecting the manifold support bracket to the heat shield using a bolt, assemble the muffler and Exhaust Pipe to the catalytic converter, make sure each support isolator from the suspension is properly fixed to the vehicle's underbody. Screw the fasteners of the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold to 28 Nm, make sure all your components clear properly and tighten the band clamps to 47 Nm, but don't allow them to press against the surface. If the downstream oxygen sensor has been removed, insert it back and connect the electrical connector. After that, run the engine to look for leaks in the exhaust and check if it contacts the vehicle's body, making changes as needed.
