The Power Steering Pump in Dodge Neon is among the important components which work to convert the engine energy into hydraulic energy to enable an easy turn of the steering wheel. This Power Steering Pump works by creating fluid pressure that helps the driver in turning the steering wheel especially with in slow movement or even at standstill. It is positioned at the front of the engine and is driven by crankshaft with the help of a V-belt or a serpentine belt; it has a fluid reservoir which may be internal or external. Dodge Neon models throughout the years have come with hydraulic power steering system where there is still a mechanical chain between the steering wheel and the wheels to enable manual control of the wheels in case of power system failure. Although some of the enthusiasts have complained that power steering tends to be too sensitive in handling, some of the manufacturers have altered systems to balance assist levels.

Dodge Neon Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions Should You Take When Assembling a Power Steering Pump Pulley Made of Plastic Composite Material on Dodge Neon?
    A:
When assembling the power steering pump pulley, take care since it's mostly plastic, but always use any specialist tools in the central shank section. The first thing to do is line up the power steering pump pulley at the end of the shaft on the pump. Put Mount Installer or Special Tool C-4063 in the pump shaft's threaded holes, facing it against the power steering pump pulley, inside the engine. Have the pulley and installer stay next to the pump shaft as you turn the installer's outer nut, pushing the pulley on the shaft until it is even with its end and you cannot move the outer nut farther. Once done, take out the installer from the power steering pump and mount the pump back onto the engine.
  • Q: How to Remove the Power Steering Pump from a 2.0L Engine on Dodge Neon?
    A:
The first step is to unhook the Battery Cable from the negative post before taking out the power steering pump. Empty the power steering fluid reservoir as completely as you can. Following this step, remove the power steering pump drive belt from the pump pulley. Use a wrench to undo the hose clamp on the return hose where it meets the reservoir. After that, simply slide the return hose off the attachment. Separate the power steering fluid pressure hose from the pump by first unscrewing the tube nut and pulling on the hose. Pull out the through-bolts at 12 and 6 O'clock, making sure you keep the flag nut; the lower nut stays with the bracket and has a cage around it. Ease off the two bolts that hold the stamped support bracket in place on the engine block. After that, loosen and completely remove the remaining bolt located at the 9 o'clock position holding the pump to the cast bracket using the two holes in the pulley. After that, get rid of the power steering pump and its reservoir from the engine. The way to disconnect the power steering pump pulley is explained in the disassembly instructions.
