The Steering Rack in Dodge Nitro cars is an essential component which transfers the rotational movements of the steering into lateral movement of front wheels. The steering control system uses rack and pinion mechanism where a pinion gear is fixed on the steering column while the rack gear is located in a metal casing that moves the wheels upon turning of the steering wheel. There are mostly hydraulic power-assisted rack and pinion steering systems used in Dodge Nitro models thus making it easier and very responsive. Another is the use of pressurized fluid in pulling and pushing the rack to enhance control on the same. However, for duties where straight gears are used, helical gears might also be employed, but they cause more amount of wear and tear and raise the temperatures of operation. If there is a problem like a leak or worn components or any other problem with the steering rack, it may hamper the functioning of the Dodge Nitro steering rack, thus, one has to make sure that the automobile is maintained on a regular basis.

Dodge Nitro Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Before installing the rack and pinion for a 2WD vehicle, move the outer Tie Rod Ends to the rack and pinion if it is required. From there, place the rack and pinion into the vehicle and attach it to the cradle with the mounting bolts, using a torque wrench set to 176 Nm (130 ft.lbs.). Put both power steering lines into the rack and pinion and make sure the tube nuts are tightened to 27 Nm (20 ft.lbs.). After that, install the lower coupler pinch bolt and push the coupler onto the rack and pinion, tightening it to a torque of 39 ft.lbs. Put the tie rod end onto the knuckle, fasten the nuts with 41 Nm (30 ft.lbs.) plus another 90 degree turn. After that, install everything you removed, lower the car and you're done. Take out the ignition, add fluid to the power steering and set the position of the wheels.
