Dodge Nitro Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove a Front Steering Knuckle on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
When replacing the front steering knuckle, lift the car, take off the wheel and tire and then work on the front steering knuckle. Then, take out the caliper adapter and support the Brake Caliper so the hose is not damaged. Following this, remove the disc brake rotor and the wheel speed sensor. If your vehicle uses four-wheel drive, take out the nut on the axle shaft. Take out the outer tie rod nut and then use tool 9360 to detach the outer Tie Rod End from the steering knuckle. After that, take out the lower Ball Joint nut and remove the lower ball joint from the suspension arm with tool C-4150A. After that, loosen the upper ball joint nut and take out the upper ball joint using a tool 9360. Check the seal side surfaces of the upper ball joint, lower ball joint and outer tie rod knuckle bosses for deep grooves or scratches; if any are present, replace the steering knuckle. After that, remove the knuckle from under the vehicle and, when necessary, pull off the hub/bearing.
  • Q: How to install a Steering Knuckle on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Before installing the steering knuckle, wipe any dirt or grease off the Ball Joint stud taper with mineral spirits. If the hub/bearing was taken out of the knuckle, attach it first and then join the knuckle to your car. Then, put in the upper ball joint nut and turn it until you reach 41 Nm (30 ft.lbs.) plus an additional 90° increase. Mount the underside nut onto the ball joint and tighten it up to 54 Nm or 40 ft.lbs., along with an additional 90° turn. Attach both Tie Rod End parts to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut from the outside to 41 Nm (30 ft.lbs.) plus an additional 90° turn. When your vehicle includes four-wheel drive, set and tighten the axle shaft nut to 136 Nm (100 ft.lbs.). After that, put in the wheel speed sensor, then the disc brake rotor and, finally, the caliper adapter. After that, fit the tire and wheel to the car and adjust the alignment as needed.
