If the drum is difficult to remove, access the rear plug in the support plate, back off the self-adjusting mechanism using a thin screwdriver to push the lever away from the adjuster screw star wheel, and retract the brake shoes with an adjuster tool. Vacuum the brake components to eliminate brake lining dust, then use a brake spring plier tool to remove the shoe return springs. Detach the adjuster cable by sliding the cable eye off the anchor pin and unhooking it from the adjuster lever. Remove the cable guide from the secondary shoe and the anchor plate from the anchor pin, followed by the adjuster lever, which can be disengaged from the spring by sliding it forward. Remove the adjuster lever spring from the pivot, then disengage and remove the shoe to shoe spring from the brake shoes, followed by the adjuster screw assembly. Install the anchor plate and adjuster cable eyelet on the support plate anchor pin, then place the cable guide in the secondary shoe and position the cable in the guide. Assemble the adjuster screw and install it between the brake shoes, ensuring the adjuster screws are correctly marked L (left) and R (right). Attach the adjuster lever and spring, connecting the adjuster cable to the lever, then install the secondary shoe retainers and spring. Connect the shoe to shoe spring from the secondary shoe to the primary shoe, verify the adjuster operation by pulling the adjuster cable upward to ensure it lifts the lever and rotates the star wheel, and confirm that the adjuster lever properly engages the star wheel teeth. Finally, install the parking brake cable into the guide spring and insert it into the backing plate, adjust the brake shoes to the drum using a brake gauge, reinstall the wheel and tire assembly, remove the support, and lower the vehicle.
