  When you handle a wheel cylinder repair or maintenance job, wash the cylinder and its parts with clean brake fluid or brake cleaner, keeping other agents from the process. Dry the cylinder and Pistons by blowing compressed air onto them, since rags or shop towels can leave pieces of lint on the cylinder bores and pistons. Light discoloration and some dark stains in the cylinder bore are standard and should not stop the engine and if the bore is comparable but not harmed by honing, replace the cylinder immediately if the bore is scored, pitted or heavily corroded. If the pistons within the engine have scratches, scoring or corrosion or seem worn, then change them. Do not sand or polish the pistons if they are scratched or worn in attempt to fix them. Get rid of the piston cups, spring and expander, because you cannot use them again, but the original dust boots can be used if they haven't worn out.

  Raise the vehicle, take off the tire and wheel and then remove the Brake Drum before service or repair. Move the adjuster lever in the direction away from the screw and turn the screw star wheel until it disappears. Together, remove the brake shoe return springs, adjuster spring and adjuster screw, next slide the top of each brake shoe apart to provide space for the wheel cylinder links. First, loosen and remove the Brake Line from the wheel cylinder and then remove the attaching screws on the support plate to complete the removal. To keep road splash out of the brake drum, use a little silicone sealer on the wheel cylinder mounting side of the support plate after installation. Press the end of the brake line into the cylinder inlet and leave it loose until you proceed to checking the line for any problems. Place the wheel cylinder onto the support plate and then use gravity to fit the attaching screws, tightening them to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). After that, bolt the brake line fitting to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.), insert all brake shoe components and align the brake shoes with the drum using a brake gauge. At this point, set the brake drum, empty the braking system and attach the wheel and tire again before lowering the vehicle.
