First put on eye protection and do not let any flames come near the fuel lines when you are working on a muffler with a torch. Remove the negative battery cable and make sure to keep the vehicle lifted with support. Detach the tailpipe front and rear hanger rods from the insulators, next take off the muffler to converter and muffler to tailpipe exhaust clamps. Use an oxygen/acetylene torch to warm up the muffler to tailpipe part and loosen the tailpipe so it pops off, then heat the muffler to the converter pipe and take it off the muffler. First, set the muffler inside the catalytic converter flange pipe, join it using a clamp, then tighten the nuts with your hands. Line up the tailpipe with the rear of the muffler, put the clamp on and screw on the nuts by hand. Attach the rods at the tailpipe hanger to the insulators and check the way the system is aligned. Next, tighten the nuts holding the muffler to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.) torque. Set the car closer to the ground, hook up the battery negative cable, start the engine and check for leaks from the exhaust and any touching of body panels; make any alignment corrections.
