Dodge Ram 1500 Van Windshield Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a windshield on Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
    A:
Drop the rear view mirror inside the car, then remove the cowl grille and moldings at the bottom of the A-pillars by pulling them outwards with pliers. Use a sharp cold knife or a pneumatic cutting tool to jab and separate the urethane. To prevent a pressurized interior after the windshield has been installed, leave a window open while you make sure the rear and trunk are closed before urethane cures. After cutting the urethane on the pinchweld flanges to a 3 mm (0.1 in.) base, install support spacers that are cleaned on repair screws or weld studs in the windshield's base. Place the windshield molding and basic windshield into the car's opening, placing the glass in the middle using the support spacers and leave marks on the glass at the spacers before you remove it. Put the windshield on a firm and padded work area with the inside side up and the blocks under it 75 cm (2.5 ft.) distant from each other. Apply molding to the edges of the windshield after giving the entire inside surface a good clean with glass cleaner and a cloth. Apply a 25 mm (1 in.) strip of Glass Prep along the edges of all surfaces and wipe out any streaks until they're gone. Allow this to dry for three minutes before covering the area with Glass Primer in a 25 mm (1 in.) band. After creating the Pinchweld, apply a 15 mm (0.75 in.) wide line of Pinchweld primer around the windshield fence, giving an extra three minutes for it to dry. After locating the windshield spacers above the lower support spacers, put a 10 mm diameter bead of urethane on the inside flange area of the pinchweld, at least 6 mm (0.25 in.) away from the window edge. You must act quickly to put the windshield in place after the adhesive starts to cure in just under 10 minutes. Having an assistant, lower the windshield over the window frame so that the reference marks at the bottom line up with the bottom spacers and carefully guide the top molding as you bring the glass down until the molding is flush with the roof. Use Mopar, Super Clean or an alternative product to rub away any excess urethane, then apply some 50 mm (2 in.) masking tape every 250 mm (10 in.) to hold the interior molding in place until everything cures. At the end, replace the cowl grille and inside rear view mirror support bracket and once the urethane has set, peel the tape strips off and run a water test.
