Dodge Ram 2500 Van Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to diagnose or service the Air Bag Control Module to ensure proper airbag deployment on Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
    A:
Before looking into or fixing anything connected to air bags, you must first disconnect the battery main cable and let the system capacitor drain for two minutes, as the air bag control module contains the impact sensor. Make sure to handle the air bag Control Module with care; striking or kicking it can damage the impact sensor and scraping the module means you have to replace it. First, separate the battery negative cable and, if you must, remove the driver side front seat riser to be able to reach the module. Take off the plastic cover over the air bag Control Module. It is fastened in place by double-faced acrylic foam tape. Depress the latch tab and, after pulling the red lock lever forward, remove the module-side connector of the instrument panel wire harness. Unscrew the three screws holding the module's mounting bracket to the welded mount and remove the module. Position the side with the arrow forward before mounting the module; only after that install and tighten the three screws to 11.8 Nm (105 in. lbs). Push the connector onto the instrument panel harness and make sure both the latch and red CPA are fully together. To remove the soft foam remnants, wipe down the floor panel with isopropyl alcohol and then place a new ACM cover over the module, press it from the center and peel away the release paper. Do not connect up the air bag negative cable until you have completed the verification test for the air bag system after any servicing.
  • Q: How to safely disable the airbag system and remove the Air Bag Control Module on Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
    A:
Before starting any work with the steering wheel, steering column, seat belt tensioners or instrument panel, you need to disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable and wait for two minutes so the air bag capacitor discharges. The impact sensor for the air bag is built into the air bag control module, so making contact with it by accident can cause damage. The module must be replaced if it falls accidentally when carrying it. Before you remove the air bag control module, unhook the negative battery cable and, if air bags were not used, allow it to sit for at least two minutes. Accessing the module in certain cases requires first removing the driver's front seat riser. Pull off the plastic cover, fixed to the air bag control module with double-faced acrylic foam tape and throw it away. Slide the red Connector Position Assurance plug to the side and then pull straight to unplug the instrument panel wire harness connector from the module. Undo the three screws and slide the module out from the mount where it is attached to the floor panel. During installation, set the new module up so that the locator pins press into the slots and the arrow on the label points ahead. Join the module to its position with three 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) tightened screws and plug back in the instrument panel wire connector, also making sure both the latch and the CPA lock are properly closed. Rub your floor panel clean to get rid of the old adhesive marks and get the new tape to stick well. Place the new cover on top of the module and push down to make sure it's secure. Do not attach the negative cable from the battery until the air bag system verification test has been done.
