Before working on the muffler, be sure to disconnect the battery negative cable and lift the vehicle for safety. After that, slip the two hanger rods at the tailpipe out of their insulation straps and take out the clamps connecting the exhaust components. Place the oxygen/acetylene torch on the area around the tailpipe insertion into the muffler and gently push the tailpipe off, lifting it as you go. After that, heat the muffler-to-converter connection, then twist the muffler off to take it off the vehicle. Place the muffler into the catalytic converter flange pipe and attach it by hand with compression clamps and tighten the nuts with your hands. Insert the rear end of the muffler into the tailpipe, hold with a clamp and tighten the nuts with your hands. Set the tailpipe hanger rods into the insulators and check the alignment, then tighten the muffler clamp nuts to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.) torque. Place the chassis on its suspension, link up the battery negative cable once more and begin the engine to examine the exhaust system and if it is touching anything around the car.
