When starting the initial action of the power steering pump, remember to switch off the engine, don't use the automatic transmission fluid and make sure the level is between the lowest and highest marks on your power steering system. Check that the dipstick reads COLD which means that it should be seen when the temperature of the fluid is 21 - 27 °C (70 - 80 °F). Rotate the steering wheel completely leftward, add suitable fluid to the pump reservoir and leave it untouched for at least two minutes. Jack the front end up so all four tires are suspended in the air, turn the steering wheel all the way to each side fully unlocked 20 times with the engine off and be sure to check the level in the dipstick for vehicles with long return lines or oil coolers; for those models, rotate the wheel 40 full rotations. Pull the bucket forwards till you hear the engine, maintain the correct fluid level while it is running, lower the front wheels and let it idle for a few minutes. Make turns in the steering wheel while listening to check that the power assist and the pump run smoothly and quietly. Should the fuel look very milky or heavily foamed, give a little while for the pump to soak up the foam before you proceed, as using too much foamy fuel could damage the pump.
