Before starting any rack and pinion maintenance, set the front wheels straight and put the car on jack stands. Separate the fluid hoses and cover their ends, after which you should remove the bolt and slip the coupler from the steering stub shaft. Before removing the pitman arm using Puller C-4150A, select the pitman shaft and pitman arm to remember their placement. Next, disconnect the mounting bolts bringing down the rack and pinion bracket, take out the rack and pinion from the vehicle and then remove the bracket too. Unbolt each gear mounting bolt to remove the whole mounting bracket. When fitting the rack and pinion, bring the mounting bracket down flush on the gear, attach the bolts and torque them to 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.). Attach the rack and pinion and bracket to the frame rail, load the bolts and nuts and tighten them to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Bring the index marks on the coupler shaft into line with the rack and pinion and steering shaft and then put the steering coupler on, fastening it with new bolts to a torque of 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Put the pitman arm into place, do the Over-Center adjustment, add the washer and retaining nut on the pitman shaft and tighten the nut using 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). After fitting the hoses to the rack and pinion, tighten them firmly on the part to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Remove the support, let the vehicle sit and add engine oil.
