Dodge Ram 3500 Power Steering Gear Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Power Steering Gear Seal on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
Liberally put high temperature grease from the seal kit on the space between the pitman shaft bearing and oil seals as well as on the dust seals and snap ring for the steering gear seal in the GAS 2500 & 3500. First, add high temp grease to the oil seal and washer so that the oil seal is set with the lip inside and the flat part against the washer. Insert the pitman shaft seal installer tool 8989 driver with the C-4171 handle, then position the oil seal, the back up washer and the retainer ring using snap ring pliers. Apply high temp grease to the dust seal and place it using the driver and handle. Put the pitman shaft protective seal protector 8993 over the shaft and then push the pitman shaft into the steering gear until it rests fully on the bearing. Following that, fasten the cover bolts manually till they reach 68 Nm (50 lb. ft) and then attach the Pitman Arm.
  • Q: How to Install the Power Steering Gear Seal on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
See if there's any damage on the piston teflon seals of your 2500 or 3500 and when you determine there's damage, use a pick to replace them by removing the o-ring layers and inserting new ones. After that, place the valve into the valve housing and add the retainer ring, securing it to 97 Nm (72 ft. lbs.). Don't forget that you will need to account for the extra length of your torque wrench. Fasten and tighten the retainer ring set screw to 2.26 Nm (20 in. lbs.), after which clean the steering gear housing with the valve assembly at the center. Set the valve assembly onto the steering gear and screw in the new bolts until the torque is 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Put the input shaft seal protector 8986 in place, add high temp grease to the new seal and use the oil seal installer tool 8987 driver and C-4171 handle to push the seal into the housing until it stops just short of the snap ring groove. Place the snap ring in the hole of the housing and then tightly push it into place using the C-4171 handle with the driver 8987. While you are doing that, add enough high temperature grease from the seal kit between the pitman shaft bearing and the two oil seals. Fit the dust seal with high temp grease, apply it with tool C-4171 and use driver 8987. Before you put in the pitman shaft, be sure the gear is centered in the middle tooth. Fit the pitman shaft into the steering gear, process the over-center mesh load, assemble the steering gear onto the car and finish with a wheel alignment.
