Dodge Ram 3500 Van Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
    A:
Before starting to work on the timing chain, first unplug the battery's negative cable and take off the timing chain cover. Roughly hand-tighten the vibration damper bolt and then tighten the crankshaft using a suitable socket and breaker bar until the timing marks are on top of each other. After that, take away the bolt that holds the camshaft sprocket and remove the chain along with the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Put a scale down beside the timing chain to see if it has any movement. To take up any play in the camshaft sprocket attaching bolt, use a torque wrench on the bolt, applying 41 Nm of rotation with the cylinder head attached or 20 Nm when it's removed while stopping the crankshaft from rotating with a block if needed. Using the cylinder heads installed, smoothly apply 14 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) to the bolt head and check how the chain reacts. When the cylinder heads are removed, use a total of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) instead. Whenever the connecter is found to be loose by more than 3.175 mm (1/8 inch), change the timing chain. Install both sprockets side by side on the bench, so their timing marks are lined up on one imaginary center line and then add the timing chain between them. Line up the crankshaft and camshaft so their keyway aligns with the sprocket, lift and hold the sprockets and chain in place and ensure both sprockets slide evenly over their shafts so their timing marks are aligned along a straightedge. Put in the camshaft bolt and tighten it to a torque of 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Measure the camshaft end play while the engine is cold; it should be 0.051 - 0.152 mm (0.002 - 0.006 inch) if the plate is new and no more than 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) if used. The next step is to fit the timing chain cover.
