When working on the Evaporative Emission Control Canister, you must remove and install two purpose-designed maintenance-free EVAP canisters that sits near the front of the tank. To access a vertically mounted Type 1 canister, first lift the vehicle and, should it be needed, undo the screws and lift off the
Fuel Tank skid plate or transfer case skid plate. Conveniently, the fuel canisters pop out easily once you remove the top bracket and undo the mount nuts. Similar procedures are used for flat-mounted Type 2 canisters and depend on lifting and supporting the vehicle and taking out skid plates first. Disconnect the fuel tubes, remove the bolts from the NVLD filter and its support bracket and then prevent the upper canister and slide out the pins from the rubber grommets of the lower canister. Attach the canisters to the end of the line in the support brackets, then check all lines for damage and securely connect them, as any leaks might show up as a DTC. After installing the lower canister in the body and securing it with nuts, set the upper canister in place, plus the NVLD filter support bracket. Next, add the NVLD filter, check the connections are secure and look for leaks before you re-attach skid plates if you want to.
