To tend to the steering gear, you should clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft and housing first with a wire brush. Take out the preload adjuster nut first, then turn the stub shaft by hand using a 12 point socket, stopping at every maximum and minimum position to count each turn. Turn the stub shaft clockwise from the stop portion of the total turns to balance it. After securing the transmission jack, take off the side cover and remove the bolts, side cover, gasket and pitman shaft all as an assembly. Take out the pitman shaft from the side cover, then pick out the dust seal from the housing without damaging the bore with the seal pick. First remove the retaining ring with snap ring pliers, then remove the washer and oil seal with a seal pick. Take out the pitman shaft bearing from the housing by using a bearing driver and handle. Place the pitman shaft bearing in the housing with the grease provided for the bearing, then put the oil seal and washer together and coat both with the new grease before you place them in the housing using the driver and handle. After installing the back up washer and retainer ring, use snap ring pliers, put the dust seal in special grease and finally drive it into its place using a driver and handle. Screw the pitman shaft into the side cover until it is completely flush with the cover, then leave the preload adjuster nut off until after making the Over-Center Rotation Torque adjustment. Mount the gasket to the inside of the cover and shape the tabs to fit, afterwards mount the side cover and pitman shaft assembly to the housing. Secure the side cover bolts with a torque of 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) and adjust the over-center rotation by releasing and retightening the brake grip until your pedals stop turning.
