For rack and pinion service or repair, begin by putting the front wheels in direct alignment and the steering wheel halfway up. Turn off the fluid hoses from the rack and pinion and detach them, then remove the shaft of the column coupler from the rack. Subsequently, remove the pitman arm and then take off the bolts to remove the rack and pinion. Fix the rack and pinion and bracket on the frame rail and tighten the bolts until your torque meter reaches 70 ft. lbs. Position the column coupler shaft with the rack and pinion, bolt a new pinch bolt in place and tighten the bolt to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Place the pitman arm and tighten its nut to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). As the last step, join the fluid hoses to the rack and pinion and tighten them to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) and then add enough fluid to the steering system.
