How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The first step in fixing or repairing a starter motor is to unhook the car's negative battery cable and lift and hold up the vehicle. Unscrew the bottom fastener holding the starter motor to the automatic transmission torque converter housing and next unscrew the top screw while holding the starter motor. Lower the starter motor slightly to reach and free the nut that holds the battery cable to the solenoid, while making sure the motor isn't just dangling from the harness wires. Take out the battery cable eyelet from the terminal on the solenoid battery and disconnect the solenoid wire harness from the starter solenoid. After doing this, place the new starter motor in the engine compartment and reconnect the solenoid terminal wire. Join the battery cable eyelet to the solenoid battery terminal, tightening the nut to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.), so that the starter motor stands secure. Loosely put the starter motor in front of the torque converter, making sure the front lip is on the inside of the housing and screw both mounts in about halfway. Adjust the lower mounting screw to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) in a 4.0L vehicle or 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) in a 4.7L one, then tighten the upper mounting screw to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). After that, drop the vehicle again and attach the negative cable of the battery.

How to Install a Starter Motor for a 3.7/4.7L Engine on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Before attaching the starter motor, match the solenoid wire with the starter, ensuring it's pushed on tightly. After that, attach the battery cable to the solenoid stud, slip in the battery cable eyelet nut and tighten it to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) so that the starter motor is not loose from the wire harness. Following that, mount the starter motor onto the transmission. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, slip the cooler tube bracket into place. Both bolts have to be set firmly by installing them and tightening to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). For vehicles with 4WD and some equipped transmissions, install 2 support bracket bolts at the transmission and install the front drive shaft when needed. After that, lower the car and attach the negative battery cable.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Starter motor starts the process of combustion so it can begin operating. The Starter is an electric motor powered by a battery through heavy gauge wiring, whose circuit activation takes place via a solenoid mounted externally. When the ignition key on a Jeep is turned to the START position, the control circuit powers the solenoid which gets the motor running and pushes the drive gear into contact with the Grand Cherokee engine flywheel or flexplate ring gear. Within the Starter housing, a rotating armature revolving in field coils or permanent magnets. The electromagnetic force caused due to the flow of current turns the armature. The drive attached to the armature cranks the engine of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
