- Q: How to Maintain Battery Cables on Jeep Grand Cherokee?A:When servicing the battery cables, make sure both the Ignition Switch and all electrical accessories are off. Loosen the negative cable terminal fastener from the negative battery terminal by using a terminal puller if you have one. Open up the positive cable terminal clamp cover, disconnect the positive cable from the battery and use a puller if labor on this step becomes necessary. Detach the screw that plugs the battery negative cable into the inner Fender, then pull out and lift up the lid for both the Power Distribution Center and the Integrated Power Module. Remove the two nuts that attach the battery positive cable eyelet terminal to the B(+) terminals in the PDC and the other nut doing the same in the IPM, then pull off the terminals from both B(+) studs. Gently pull out the connection for the battery wire harness three pin connector from the Battery Tray. On 3.7L and 4.7L engines, take out the nut securing the eyelet terminal of the generator output cable to the generator terminal stud and separate the battery wire harness connector from the generator field terminal connector receptacle. Depress the retaining clip on the battery wire harness and carefully slide it off the top of the valve cover stud. For these engines, remove the nut that attaches the generator output cable eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal stud, separate the generator field terminal connector wires from the connector receptacle on the battery wire harness and remove the battery wire harness retaining clips off the valve cover studs. After raising the vehicle on a hoist, for the 6.1L engine, pull off the retaining clips under the engine on the wire harness that holds the battery. Lift out the bolt connecting the battery negative cable to the engine's chassis, remove the nut joining the battery positive cable to the starter solenoid stud and pull off the battery positive cable from the B(+) terminal stud. Come to the final step by disconnecting the battery wire harness connector from the starter solenoid, removing the clips holding the harness on the engine and wiping the battery wire harness from inside the engine compartment.
- Q: How Are Battery Cables Serviced and Replaced in a Wire Harness on Jeep Grand Cherokee?A:Each cable, negative and positive, is connected in the battery wire harness and if either cable is unsuitable or damaged, the whole wire harness must be discarded. First, keep the ignition in Off mode and make sure all electric parts are not in use. Open the battery negative cable terminal clamp by turning the pinch-bolt hex nut counterclockwise and using a battery terminal puller, if it is stuck. Do the same with the battery positive cable as you did with the black one. Then, loosen the cover of the PDC, take off the two nuts fastening the battery and generator cables to the studs and withdraw the cables. Separate the wire connector from the headlamp on the right and also from the dash wire near the front of the battery. Next, unscrew the screw holding the negative cable to the inner fender shield. Carefully unlatch the cover attached to the generator output terminal stud and take out the nut holding the cable eyelet terminal into position on the stud. Take off the screw holding the battery's negative ground eyelet terminal to the right side of the engine block and unplug the wire connector from the generator field. Loosen the nut securing the positive cable from the starter solenoid's B(+) terminal and disconnect the battery cable connector from the connector on the solenoid before removing the battery wire harness. When you set up the wire harness, clean the battery cable terminal clamps and terminal posts, find a suitable place for the wire harness in the engine compartment and reconnect the battery wire harness connector to the starter solenoid. Screw the eyelet terminal of the battery's positive cable onto the B(+) terminal of the starter solenoid and tighten the nut with 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.) of force. Screw the negative cable terminal to the engine block until you reach 10.2 Nm (90 in. lbs.), then attach the battery wire harness connector to the corresponding connector on the generator field. Join the generator output cable terminal onto the generator output terminal stud and tighten the nut to 10.7 Nm/95 in. lbs. Line up and snap the cover at the generator output terminal stud housing, then secure the battery negative cable eyelet terminal to the inner fender shield with a screw adjusted to 28.2 Nm (250 in. lbs.). Join the battery wire harness connector to the dash and headlamp respective wire harness connectors and connect the positive battery cable and output cable to the PDC B studs. Set the wire tensions to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). After closing and locking the PDC cover, hook up the battery's clamp on its positive terminal and tighten the pinch-bolt hex nut to 6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.), then do the same for the battery's negative terminal. Very lightly put petroleum jelly or chassis grease on the open parts of the battery cable terminal clamps and battery terminal posts.
