Camshaft Position Sensor is one of the significant assemblies of a car particularly of jeep liberal that identify the position and speed of the camshaft. This is relayed to the engine control module, or the ECM, which controls the fuel injectors as well as ignition timings for the optimal performance of the engines. Normally, Camshaft Position Sensor is installed above the camshaft, though its position may be different depending on the model. Camshaft Position Sensor is used in Jeep Liberty vehicles to keep track of the sequence of the engine pistons and valves where it is installed in the engines with variable valve timing and in cooperation with the crank sensor. Both systems are crucial for coordinating fuel injection-timing that is important for enhancing the efficiency of the engine. Jeep Liberty is known to be extremely sensitive to the condition of the Camshaft Position Sensor as any damage to it is sure to cause deep problem in the vehicle's performance.

Jeep Liberty Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft Position Sensor on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
On the right-front side of the cylinder head is where you'll find the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) and you can adjust its position. Disconnect the electrical connector first, then loosen the two bolts and move the sensor towards the engine's rear. When you are installing, start by removing the three bolts holding the plastic upper timing belt cover to ensure the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor's electrical connection is not damaged. With the camshaft timing gear and target wheel in alignment with the sensor's face, place the sensor behind the target wheel so it does not get damaged as you start the engine. Place the sensor next to the cylinder head and install the two bolts only hand tight. The distance between the back side of the target wheel and the sensor face should be exactly 0.030". Use either a spark plug gapping gauge or brass shim stock to set it appropriately. Push the sensor forward slowly so that it touches the gapping gauge and when you feel it, tighten the two mounting bolts following the torque specifications shown in the manual. After having all the bolts tightened, make sure to re-check the air gap and correct anything that is off before tightening the bolts again. Afterwards, tighten the bolts in the upper timing belt cover and join the electrical wires to both the ECT sensor and the CMP sensor.
  • Q: How to Locate and Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor on a 2.4L 4-Cylinder Engine on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has a Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the right-front part of the cylinder head and its position is adjustable. First, take out the electrical connector, then remove the bolts that hold the sensor and slide the sensor towards the engine's rear. To begin the installation, open the plastic upper timing belt cover by removing three bolts, following with disconnecting the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector so it doesn't get damaged. Until both the camshaft timing gear and target wheel are found next to the sensor face, keep the sensor face placed after the target wheel so that nothing is damaged when the engine starts. Mount the sensor against the cylinder head and fasten the two mounting bolts by hand, not all the way tight. Make sure the distance from the rear of the target wheel to the sensor face is 0.030 inches with either an L-shaped wire-type spark plug gauge or a 0.030 inch thick piece of brass shim stock. Press the sensor so that it pressing on the gapping gauge, but not too tightly and fasten the two mounting bolts using the listed torque specifications. After tightening, look at the air gap again and adjust it if needed before torquing the bolts once more. Cover the upper timing belt again with the three bolts, after which you should reconnect both the ECT sensor and the CMP sensor to their electrical connectors.
