  Q: How to Remove an Individual Ignition Coil on Jeep Liberty?

  Every spark plug is sparked with an individual ignition coil which fits into machined holes in the cylinder head and is anchored above the Intake Manifold with a mounting stud/nut. At the base of the coil, you'll find a rubber boot that seals off the spark plug and holds a spring that provides mechanical contact when connected to the top of the plug; these have to be changed as a set and are not serviced alone. A cylinder head opening is sealed by an O-ring. Sometimes, I need to take off the throttle body air intake tube or even the whole air intake box to get to the coil. Start by pressing the release lock down and pulling the electrical connector away from the coil. After cleaning the inside the coil with an air compressor, loosen and remove the coil mounting nut from the mounting stud. Raise the coil slowly out of the cylinder head hole, turning it a bit and then remove it from the car.

  The ignition coil on a 3.7L needs to be lifted from the bracket first, as sometimes the throttle body air intake tube or intake box blocks access to it. Pull the connector away from the coil after pressing the release lock down. Disconnect the wire starting at the coil and moving your way up. Blow at the base of the coil with compressed air before starting the work. First, get rid of the mounting bolt and then gently twist and lift the coil out of the cylinder head opening. Each coil is meant for two cylinders and the three coils go in the holes drilled for cylinders 1, 3 and 5 and are attached to the Intake Manifold by their mounting nuts. The coil has a rubber cover on the spark plug, a spring inside for physical contact and another O-ring at the cylinder head to keep everything secure.
