Jeep Liberty Clutch Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install the Clutch Disc on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
Before installing the clutch disc, the flywheel face must be lightly scuff sanded using 180 grit emery cloth and cleaned with wax and grease remover. Use Mopar(R) high temperature bearing grease or equivalent product to grease the pilot bearing. Check the new clutch disc for a free slide on the transmission input shaft splines. Use a dial indicator to check the face runout at the disc hub 6 mm (1/4 in.) from the outer edge of the facing. Requires replacement if the runout is more than 0.5 mm (0.020 in.). Place the clutch disc on the flywheel with the flywheel side, or if unmarked, the flat side of the disc hub against the flywheel. Pass the clutch alignment tool through the clutch disc and into the pilot bearing, then fit the clutch pressure plate over the disc and onto the flywheel. Thread the pressure plate bolts finger tight. Use factory bolts only, and ensure the same size, otherwise there may insufficient thread engagement or interference with Dual Mass Flywheel. The pressure plate bolts shall be tightened evenly and in rotation a few threads at a time to a torque of 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) to ensure that they are tightened evenly and do not distort the pressure plate. To the clutch disc hub and the splines of the transmission input shaft, apply a light coat of Mopar(R) high temperature bearing grease or equivalent. Be careful not to over-lubricate the shaft splines, otherwise, grease will contaminate the disc. Finally, install the gearbox.
  • Q: How to service and repair the Clutch Disc on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
Begin disassembly transmission for service and repair of clutch disc. If a new clutch is not being installed, mark the position of the pressure plate on the flywheel using paint or a scriber for assembly reference. Evenly loosen and apply lubricant on the pressure plate bolts in rotation to relieve spring tension. This very important step will avoid warping of the plate. Then remove the pressure plate bolts followed by the pressure plate and now the disc. Use 180 grit emery cloth to lightly scuff sand the flywheel face and clean it with wax and grease remover. Mopar high temperature bearing grease or equivalent grease should be used to grease the pilot bearing. Ensure the runout and correct operation of the new clutch disc and free sliding on the transmission input shaft splines. When the disc is mounted on the input shaft, check the face runout using a dial indicator at the disc hub 6 mm (1/4 inch) from the outer edge of the facing. If the runout exceeds 0.5 mm (0.020 inch), obtain another clutch disc. Put the clutch disc on the flywheel with the side marked flywheel towards the flywheel. The flat side of the disc hub goes towards the flywheel on the 3.7L engine. It goes towards the transmission on the 2.4L engine if not marked. To start with the installation, thread the clutch alignment tool through the clutch disc and locate it inside the pilot bearing. After this, position the clutch pressure plate above the disc and on the flywheel. Using only the factory bolts of correct size to avoid insufficient thread engagement or contact with the Dual Mass Flywheel, install the pressure plate bolts finger tight. Tightening of the pressure plate bolts shall take place evenly and in rotation, a few threads at a time, to a specified torque to avoid distorting the pressure plate. On the 2.4L engines, the pressure plate bolts should be torqued to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs. ). On the 3.7L engines, the pressure plate bolts should be torqued to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs. ). Spread a thin coating of Mopar high temperature bearing grease, or equivalent, on the hub and splines of the clutch disc and about the transmission input shaft splines. Do not grease the shaft splines excessively to avoid greasing the disc. At last, a transmission installation.
